Explore Key Energy Investment Areas
Wind Energy
Wind farms are possible at certain locations including along the coastline, offshore, and mountainous areas. Low wind speed turbines now allow rural electrification, especially in the North.
Solar Energy
Sierra Leone receives around 1460 kWh/m² annually. There are strong opportunities for grid interconnection, generation, and mini-grid solar development projects.
Hydropower
With rainfall rates of 2500 mm/yr, hydropower is a key energy source. The government is promoting feasibility studies for about 6 hydropower projects.
Bioenergy
Biomass is Sierra Leone’s largest energy source. There is significant potential to create biofuels from crops like maize and cassava, and generate biogas and methane from waste.
Energy Transmission & Distribution
The long-term strategy includes rural grid expansion, off-grid supply, and distributed energy options to connect non-electrified localities and scattered settlements.
